Kathmandu is the main gateway to Nepal and the best base for first-time travelers. It combines airport access, Thamel nightlife, temples, palace squares, markets, food walks and short hill escapes. The city rewards travelers who slow down and understand the stories behind each site.
Two to three nights is practical for a first visit. One day can cover selected highlights, while two days allows a calmer mix of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. Add Nagarkot if sunrise and countryside views matter.
Thamel is the easiest base for first-time visitors because restaurants, shops, money exchange, tour pickup points and evening walks are close together. Travelers who prefer quieter streets can consider heritage neighborhoods, boutique stays or Patan, depending on the final route.
Airport-area hotels are useful for late arrivals or early departures, but they are less attractive for guests who want evening market time. Sambara can match hotel area to the first and last day schedule.
Kathmandu is rich but busy. Traffic can change timing quickly, so the best sightseeing days are planned by area instead of forcing distant stops into one route. A licensed guide adds value because the city is full of living rituals, courtyards and stories that are easy to miss alone.
